Sweating & Hair Transplant Explained

Sweating & Hair Transplant Explained

We’ve discussed on this blog several times how sweating after a hair transplant should be avoided. In this article, Hair Transplant surgeon Dr. Gaurav Solanki will let you know why!

As you would already know in case you’ve been following our blog, hair transplant results take a while to show, and for the initial few weeks after the procedure, for the immediate recovery time, sweating is an activity that should be avoided. This is because after a hair transplant it is important to keep the hair follicles dry and out of direct sunlight.

We had also previously explained how to take care of your scalp after a hair transplant, from picking the right shampoo to lotion. You may check out all that information here.

Why Should You Avoid Sweating After a Hair Transplant?

When you sweat, many different particles from the environment like dirt and sand can stick to your sweaty scalp and even cause infections! Moreover, sweating is something that you can link to activities like exposure to sunlight, increased physical strain, explosive movements, etc. And needless to say, all of these activities fall in the “Don’t” category of the “Do’s” & “Don’ts” that are recommended after a hair transplant.

What Can I Do to Avoid Sweating on The Scalp After Undergoing a Hair Transplant?

Here are a few tips that you can follow to avoid sweating on the scalp after undergoing a Hair Transplant.

  1. Stay away from the Gym & avoid heavy exercise: Needless to say, a heart rate of more than 50%-60% can cause excessive sweating. So, avoid the gym for a few weeks after undergoing a hair transplant.
  2. Wear a hat, especially one made of linen: Wearing a loose comfy hat is a great way to step outdoors after a Hair Transplant, all while protecting your scalp from the sun.
  3. Never wipe the sweat with your hands: Always dab lightly with a paper towel in case you are sweating. Wiping the sweat off with bare hands is a normal reaction for most but you should work towards correcting that.
  4. Do not tilt your head towards the ground: Tilting your head towards the ground or doing anything that does the same would cause a sudden rush of blood to the scalp which can cause bleeding and irritation. Best to avoid it completely!

After How Long Can Is Sweating No Longer an Issue?

Roughly after a week or two is the usual timeline given to most for taking such precautions. After that, you can always begin going back to your usual routine with light activities first (like household chores) and then to other heavier activities (like gym and cycling).

In case the goal is to get back to super intense activities like boxing or any other sport then it’s best to wait for at least 4-5 weeks. The results would be worth it after all!
